About Us

The Friends of Burley is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization whose sole mission is to raise money to support Burley School. Our members consist of anyone – families, friends, faculty – who are committed to supporting the fundraising efforts needed to sustain vital programs at Burley Elementary School. Everyone is a Friend of Burley!

All board and committee meetings are open to the public and all are welcome to attend. Friends of Burley is an independent group, not part of a larger organization (like the PTA for example), and a membership fee is not required. Volunteer-based and driven, Friends of Burley is simply a vehicle to raise funds and build relationships with the larger community.

About Burley

Augustus H. Burley School provides a unique, literature-rich education within a warm and caring environment. Located in Chicago’s Lakeview community, Burley is a public elementary school where teaching and learning are energizing, collaborative, interactive, and joyful. Burley School was recently ranked as one of the top ten neighborhood public schools in the city of Chicago, and named as one of the city’s top public schools by Chicago Magazine.

Burley is Chicago's first Literature and Writing Magnet Cluster School and was recently awarded a Technology Magnet designation. Within our century-old building is a dynamic and thriving learning community where students, teachers, parents, and administrators work together to create an environment in which all students are challenged and nurtured. Our teachers and administrators have written a literature-based, multidisciplinary curriculum based on current research, teacher experience, and local, state, and national standards. The curriculum is not textbook-bound; rather, it is driven by many resources as students engage in meaningful inquiry and immerse themselves in quality literature. At Burley, students grow to be readers, writers, thinkers, and responsible members of the community.

Burley is a small, diverse school serving approximately 575 students in grades Pre-K through 8. We are proud of our committed, talented faculty; our dedicated and caring parent community; and our creative, talented, energetic students. The Burley family works together to help students thrive and develop into life-long learners.
